Why ad revenue varies so much by country

The same ad slot can earn many times more in one country than another. Here’s what drives the gap, and how to use your country reports.

Open the country report in AdMob, AdSense or YouTube Studio and you’ll usually see a few countries delivering most of the revenue, even when the traffic is spread far wider. That’s normal. Ads are sold in auctions, and what advertisers are willing to pay depends heavily on where your audience is.

1. Advertiser demand

Countries with large, competitive advertising markets — the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, much of Western Europe, Japan and the Gulf states — have more advertisers bidding for each impression. More bidders means higher prices, so your eCPM and RPM rise.

2. What a customer is worth

Advertisers bid based on what a click or install is worth to them. Where average spending per customer is higher, they can afford to pay more for each impression. That’s why the same rewarded video can be priced very differently in two countries with similar numbers of users.

3. Language and content

Ads are matched to content. Finance, software, insurance and travel topics attract high-value advertisers in any language, but the pool of advertisers buying in a given language — and the number targeting a given country — affects how full and how competitive each auction is.

4. Seasonality

Ad prices follow advertiser budgets: they typically dip in early January and at the start of each quarter, and climb in the run-up to big shopping periods. Those peaks fall at different times in different countries — for example around local festivals and sales events — so your country mix changes how seasonal your revenue looks.

5. Currency

Most Google ad revenue is reported in US dollars or your account currency. If your local currency moves against the dollar, what you receive at home changes even when your audience doesn’t. See earnings in your local currency, explained.

How to use your country data

  1. Find your top earners, not just your top traffic. Sort by revenue and by RPM or eCPM. A country with modest traffic but high RPM may deserve more content or marketing.
  2. Watch mix shifts. If revenue drops while traffic is flat, check whether more of your audience now comes from lower-paying countries.
  3. Localise where it pays. Translating store listings, app UI or video subtitles for a high-value market can lift both traffic and price.
  4. Compare like with like. Judge a country’s eCPM against its own history rather than against the US.
